Students can make their own bins reusing a wide variety of materials. By reusing materials, useful items discarded by those who no longer want them are prevented from entering landfill. When students design and make their own bins a strong sense of ownership and engagement is more likely to occur as they become personally invested in the project. Novelty and creativity is important and can create a renewed awareness of litter and waste problems among the student body. Whether you run a competition, design subject themed bins for each classroom, or choose your favourite celebrity to transform into a bin – this is definitely a worthwhile and fun activity. Would YOU rather discard litter in a regular bin OR ‘Slam Dunk the Junk’ in a basketball themed bin??
