Community engagement is a vital part of environmental projects and the benefits of it are well documented. It can result in better outcomes for all stakeholders, and it creates a sense of community ownership. Effective community engagement is about recognising that involving the public in a project is no longer about information dissemination and telling the people what is being done but is a two-way information sharing tool. Students can facilitate a presentation for their local community on litter and waste problems in the area and encourage open discussion about what needs to be done and where priorities should lay. Ultimately, by involving your community you will build support and gain more active citizens to help keep the community free of litter in the long term.
